Remembering Cape Verde is a song by the great composer Amandio Cabral of Cape Verde. This song (who I heard Teofilo Chantres sing) was a song that really brought back the whole Cape Verdean experience to me and everything I missed about CV. Amandio is also credited with writing the well known hit Sodade popularized by the Cape Verdean and world music diva Cesaria Evora.
This is a tune I wrote during my first trip to Cape Verde islands. The song came to me while staying in Achada St Antonio (Praia) on the island of Santiago after a two week stay on the island of Sao Vicente or "Soncent" in Creole. Its a song in my simple creole of longing for the island Sao Vicente and for a special someone.
Nha Ilha or "My Island" is a song I composed in tribute to the island of Sao Vicente in Cape Verde. I wrote the song in the living room of my wife's house in Ribeira Juliao. I was inspired by the rich musical environment around me, my great Cape Verdean musician friends and their undeniable "morabeza" or hospitality. I love the city of Mindelo on the island of Sao Vicente, I consider it my second home, my island.
Princezito is the composer of this beautiful tune also made popular by the Cape Verdean star Mayra Andrade. I was inspired by this beautiful lyric, some guitar ideas I had and by the Cape Verdean Batuque rhythm in this song so I recorded it here at home.
Here is a song I wrote in Portuguese language in dedication to the wonderful culture and country of Cape Verde. I was so inspired living in Mindelo for a few months and this is another song that came to me while I was there. I also tip my hat a little to the fantastic rhythmic style from the french Caribbean "Biguine"
Another gorgeous melody and lyric that I love by the genius of Cape Verde's Teofilo Chantres. The arrangement is my interpretation of Cesaria Evoras arrangement on her Album Cafe Atlantico. Dilma and I sing a nice duet and the intro has a wonderful call and response melody line. Someday I will get a whole band in the studio and record but for now that is me on all instruments and Dilma and I singing...
The famous Cape Verdean Morna "Amor" by B. Leza. What a gorgeous and inspired tune as so many B. Leza songs are! This song really captures the essence of the bluesy ballad style "Morna" often noted for its roots in Portuguese Fado.
Recorded at my home studio featuring Cape Verdean singer Dilma Barros. I play all instruments and crafted this arrangement.
This is a new recording of the classic Cape Verdean anthem "Sodade" with Dilma Barros soulful voice. This song never loses its charm and I had fun finding some new ideas in the arrangement. Sodade is probably the most well known song outside of Cape Verde thanks to the many recordings and Cesaria Evora's singing it around the globe for years.
Another song I wrote for this incredible place in Cape Verde. The city of Mindelo on the island of Sao Vicente (Soncent) Its impossible to not be inspired and dedicate songs to this place as a visitor or a native, Mindelo never fails to inspire.
