Overjoyed (Stevie Wonder)

(Mitchell Long (Tropics))

Stevie Wonder is one of my greatest inspirations and I love his compositions with the rich harmony and great lyrics. Its a big responsibility to sing his songs so sometimes I just play them instrumental and let the melody tell the story. Overjoyed is one of my favorite Stevie Wonder songs and it fits very nice on the guitar and I don't have to keep up with Stevie's huge vocal range!

Them Thats Got (Ray Charles & Ricci Harper)

(The Organ Grinders (Demo))

I love Ray Charles. After playing with Billy Tolles and Gordon Sims for years, Ray Charles seemed like the best source to go deeper into the roots and this style of music.I found many old vinyl records of Ray Charles and started finding so much music that I never had heard before. Heres one of those gems I have now made my own.Any musician can relate to this lyric!

This is a demo for "The Organ Grinders" and was recorded live in a studio in Boulder, CO.

Unforgettable (Irving Gordon)

(Mitchell Long (Demo))

I recorded this jazz classic at home by overdubbing a couple guitars and singing the vocal. I wanted to make a demo to show a little of the traditional jazz side of my music. Its such a classic song, I love to play it on solo guitar as a fast samba too!

Round Midnight (Theolonius Monk)

(The Organ Grinders (Demo))

The Organ Grinders featuring myself on guitar and vocals, the late greatGordon Sims on Hammond organ and my old friend Kevin Smith on drums. We were Billy Tolles back up band for so many years, but we liked to get away and play so we became "The Organ Grinders" when we were not with Billy.I will forever miss Billy Tolles and Gorgon Simms, tao of my greatest mentors. I like the sound of my guitar on this track, its like taking a trip back in time to the days of Wes Montgomery...

Body and Soul (Johnny Green)

(Mitchell Long + Mitchell Long)

Body and Soul is one of my favorite songs of all time. I started doing it in a Brazilian samba feel and love the way it feels there. When I recorded this I really just wanted to open up, blow on some changes and play free. There is some interesting things that happen, its like taking a ride. I recorded it at home simply overdubbing a solo over the rhythm track.

Leila (Wes Montgomery)

(Mitchell Long (Demo))

This song is kind of obscure. I think you have to be a real Wes Montgomery fan to know it. But like so many of Wes Montgomery's compositions it is fun trip to take with all the kicks and harmonic twists and turns. Again this is "Mitchell and Mitchell" simply overdubbing a solo on the rhythm track.

Blues For Nat (Billy Tolles)

(Mitchell Long)

Billy Tolles wrote this blues for the late great drummer in denver Nat Yarborough whom we all loved and enjoyed working with on the Denver scene. It was one of Billy's favorites to play, often a break tune or night closer and we'd hit it really hard night after night... it was fun to try and create that big jazz blues vibe with two guitars. Just playing this tune I can feel Billy's prescence god rest his great soul. Again this is recorded at home on the aw2816, first takes, no overdubs.
